During this week I have started work on the first of my 3 channel Idents for Discovery Science, "The Rotating Planets". The basic idea for this was to create a working, to scale (or best I could get it to scale), animated model of the Solar System.
The rotating planets and Sun were very simple to make as would be expected, consisting of only basic spheres with custom made map textures applied to each individual sphere as the planet’s surface. An example is shown below of the Sun and Mercury having such maps.
I particularly like the background image which I picked out for this Ident and will most likely use it for both of my other Idents as well.
